In reply to your letter of May 31st, the first year's income of the Tyndall Mining Fund, established in memory of the late Professor John Tyndall, will be devoted to the establishment of a studentship of study and research on subjects relating to mining and the safety of miners. The value of the studentship will be about £35, and it will be open to any British subject. The applicant should state the particular kind of research he proposes to carry out his qualifications, and the place where he intends to carry on the work. The application, which should be sent to the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society no later than September 15, should be accompanied by two testimonials or references in support. The student elected will be at liberty to follow his ordinary avocation if it is consistent with the aims of the studentship.' |
