| Description | Advises that Sir Ronald Ross has sent correspondence regarding the publication of Newton's unpublished works of interest. Ross has suggested a joint meeting between the Royal Society, the British Academy and the British Science Guild, as well as various individuals. At the Officers' Meeting it was considered best to consult Dr JWL [James Whitbread Lee] Glaisher, FRS before taking any action. Notes the idea seems to have originated with Jourdain who wished to consult a complete edition of Newton's works, but this scheme is only to publish the unpublished manuscripts. Also notes a letter of 6 November from Sir Ronald Ross to [Sir Arthur] Schuster, former Secretary of the Royal Society, asking if it was worth approaching the Royal Society for a subsidy for the publication of the manuscripts, and Schuster responded that it would depend on the content of the manuscripts and whether they were scientific in nature. Mr JM Child is willing to prepare the material and has suggested the main collections of value would be the Portsmouth Papers at Cambridge University Library, manuscripts held at Trinity College Library and a collection in the hands of Lord Wimborne. Says there has been no estimate of the size of the volume, volumes or proposed papers or of costs. He has a letter from Dr Charles Singer, Oxford, to Miss Lacey saying he has discussed the matter with the Secretary of the British Academy, Sir Israel Gollancz and Sir Frederic Kenyon and is hopeful that the British Academy might be interested in the matter. It has also been suggested the best combination of institutions would be the Royal Society and Trinity College. Requests Dr Glaisher's opinion on the desirability of publishing the manuscripts, if the Royal Society should grant a substantial amount of money for the project, and which institutions would be best to do the work. |
