Title | Copy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to [Robert John Strutt] Lord Rayleigh, FRS |
Date | 14 February 1924 |
Description | Writes on 6 matters; [Frederick Alexander] Lindemann has reported on 'The Constitution of the Secondary Spectrum' by [William Mitchinson] Hicks and is negative, James Hopwood Jeans now feels the only option is to explain to Hicks that the third referee and the Committee is unable to recommend publishing; Jeans mentions being inclined to not take Lindemann's suggestions as Hicks would have every right to publish an abstract in 'Nature' which could led to the matter becoming unpleasant; second matter is on [Jaroslav] Heyrovsky's paper 'The Electrode Potentials and the Energy of Solvation', which the referee Sir James Walker reported adversely to, and asked for [John Alfred Valentine] Butler's criticism to be met, after telling this to [Frederick George] Donnan, the communicator of the paper, Heyrovsky sent in his reply in the form of a separate paper ' A Note on 'the significance of the Electrode Potential' being a reply to the criticism of J.A.V. Butler', suggests sending these back to Walter to report on them together. Of the third matter; [Harold Bailey] Dixon agreed that 'The behaviour of gases in contact with glass surfaces' by D. H. Bangham and F. P. Burt be reduced to 7 pages. The fourth matter concerning Rutherford sending in 2 papers, 'The large-angle scattering of a-particles by light nuclei' by E. S. Bieler and 'Particles of long range from polonium' by [Leslie Fleetwood] Bates and J. S. Rogers, asks these to be passed for publication in Proceedings although Rutherford and Jeans have found the last paragraph of Bieler to be childish and asks if Strutt can authorise the removal of it; of the fifth matter [William] L. Braggs has sent in a paper 'The Refractive Indices of Calcite and Aragonite' which Jeans feels worthy of being printed in Proceedings, unless Strutt wants to look through it first; of the sixth matter states that Jeans has seen [William Arthur] Bone, who has agreed to Dixon's suggestions providing the 5 pages to be removed can be published separately. Asks Strutt if this should be the case or if the papers should be published in 2 parts. |
