| Description | Rix states he is sorry that Seeley called on Mr Collings in vain, but he thought he had made it clear in his note of 23 July that Collings could only meet on Friday this week. He has now instructed Collings to meet Seeley at the Royal Society at 10am on Tuesday.
With regard to the delay, Rix suggests that this is largely due to Seeley's method of building up the papers and plates as he goes along, and that if he matched the practice of other authors in providing the finished drawings to begin with, they could procure an estimate in a couple of days and have work begun at once. He reports that Collings made an 'honest attempt' for almost an hour to form an estimate, trying to identify the fossils from Seeley's rough outline and guess the amount of work required, but an approximate estimate was quite impracticable without Seeley's help.
Rix further states that the estimates for Seeley's recent papers have always been altered more than once in the progress of work due to additional figures or revisions being decided upon, and as a consequence the Officers have requested a definite estimate before work begins in this instance, with neither the estimate nor the arrangement to be altered afterwards. |
