Description | Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society and its Fellows, compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include obituary notices of Fellows and other scientists (including, pp.3-4 Mary Somerville). The Royal Society's conversaziones, anniversary and other meetings are reported upon. Other content includes articles on exploration (Transit of Venus), court reporting (p.16 'Dr Lankester and Clerkenwell juries: extraordinary scene.') and accounts of external meetings, including of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Letters to the editors of the various newspapers are also collected (including p.32, Thomas Henry Huxley on 'Miss Jex-Blake and her examiners').
Generally, the cuttings are dated, but the source newspapers are only occasionally identified. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'Scraps. Biographical. Feb 1872-Feb.1875.' 'Biographical' has been scored through in pencil, reflecting the more omniverous nature of the content. |
