Title | Referee's report by Ernest Howard Griffiths, on a paper 'The density and coefficient of cubical expansion of ice' by J H Vincent |
Date | February 1902 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full with slight modification. It may be possible to omit figures one to three and to greatly reduce the size of figures five 'a' and 'b'. Figures six and eight could be reduced and together with figure seven, put on one block. Figure twelve might be omitted and in any case could be greatly reduced. As far as he is aware the numerical value of the density of ice is known with less accuracy than any other physical constant and so any serious effort to increase their knowledge in this matter is of great value. He had the pleasure of inspecting the author's apparatus and was greatly impressed by the accuracy and ingenuity exhibited. The author's confirmation of Nichols' results is conclusive. The only remaining doubt is the possibility that the water was not entirely air-free. Some further investigation into the latter matter might be advisable. [Published in Philosophical Transactions A, 1902].
