TitleLetter from Thomas Gold to Dr Frank Press, President's Science Adviser, the White House, Washington DC
Date30 November 1977
DescriptionIs sending Press a paper because it is in Press's field and because it may affect both the problem of the search for fuels and of the prediction of earthquakes.

Gold is preparing to conduct a major program in this area. Novel methods of continuous 'sniffing' over faults are being developed; post-earthquake, atmospheric gas collection byplanes will be organized, as well as sea water gas analysis. Sensitive methods of detection of gas transport through the ground are to be devised (one can easily beat the sensitivity of the radon). In addition to many people at Cornell, they will have the cooperation of Mel Calvin and his chemistry lab at Berkeley, also Dr Lemmon and Dr Otvon; Gordon MacDonald at Dartmouth, and also various specialists in isotope work. Walter Munk has also expressed gret interest, especially in view of the tsunami considertions.

Gold knows that very similar considertions are being pursued int he Soviet Union, and some fo their observations (Sout Dagesan) are nost interesting in this connection.l Also it is clear that there will be a revival of the 'at least partly' abiogenic origin of petroleum - there already is in the Soviet Union.
