Title | Letter from Sir David Gill, Director of the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope, to Sir William Huggins, President of the Royal Society |
Date | 15 April 1903 |
Description | Encloses an official letter to Sir William Huggins [CD/47/2]. States that the Royal Society brought the subject of [measuring] the Geodetic Arc along the 30th meridian before the International Association of Scientific Academies, with full support. Thinks that Huggins' support would add weight to the application for a survey of the arc in Africa. Suggests that if Mr Goode is out of town then Huggins should communicate with Mr J. F. Jones, Joint Manager and Secretary of the British South Africa Company. Agrees if the Royal Society decides it is better to make the application directly to General Bonsdorff instead of through the Russian Ambassador in London. Suggests that Sir George Darwin, British representative on the International Geodetic Commission, might write to Bonsdorff as he knows him personally. |
