"Lee...provoked a violent storm by virulent criticism of the Greenwich Observations for 1821 recently published under the supervision of the Astronomer Royal, John Pond. Very properly his letter was first referred to Pond, and then a competent Royal Society committee was set up to examine both criticism and reply. The committee decided that Pond had not been 'culpable', but had been negligent and allowed many errors to creep in...Lee was asked to apologise for the manner of his attack, but preferred to resign".
