Citation | Distinguished as an Astronomer - Author of observations on Sun spots showing that they may be caused by a down rush and that their absorption lines are increased in breadth. Originator of a well planned and long continued series of spectral observations directed to the discovery of Solar Prominences and envelope without obscuration of the sun by eclipse in which discovery he was eminently successful, and from which he inferred that the prominences consist principally of hydrogen, and that the envelope presents other peculiarities which promise to increase our knowledge of Solar Physics. Author of observations on the features of Mars - Author & Editor of works on Astronomy and a large contributor to scientific literature - attached to science and desirous to promote its progress. |
