Title | Baird, Andrew Wilson: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | A W Baird Cap Baird carried out very successfully an important series of levelling operations in the Bombay and Madras Presidencies; the country surveyed extending to over 3000 miles. These operations, which were carried out on the rigid system laid down by General Walker RE, FRS, were so well carried out by Cap Baird and his native assistant that the line closed at Bombay with a difference of only 3 inches in the sea level as obtained at Bombay, from that brought down from the Gulf of Cutch. The results are published in Vol I, Levelling operations, Bombay Presidency, 1876. He organised and is now engaged in carrying out, the extensive scheme of Tidal observations and reductions instituted by the Indian Government. The Tide Tables for Indian Ports now published yearly, based on the results of the Harmonic Analysis of these observations, are constructed and published under the direct superintendence of Cap Baird. He contributed to the Bombay Gazeteer two important articles "On the Rum of Cutch" and "on the Gulf of Cutch" for which he received the thanks of the Indian Government in Jan 1881. |
