| Citation | Late Electrical Engineer. Eminent for his discoveries in Electrical Science, and their practical application. (1) Discovery of the indefinite increase of the Magnetic and Electric Forces from quantities indefinitely small (Phil Trans, 1867). This discovery is now used in all Dynamos, and for this the Executive Council of the International Inventions Exhibition awarded Mr Wilde a Gold Medal , although not an exhibitor; (2) The successful application of this discovery through various inventions to the production and employment of the Electric Light in the Royal Navy as a protection against Torpedoes, and for other purposes (1873-1880); (3) The large application of the same discovery to the electro deposition of Metals from their solutions (1867-1880); (4) The discovery of the property of the alternating current to control and render synchronous the rotations of the Armatures of a number of magneto-electric machines, whereby their united effect may be obtained without mechanical gearing (Phil Mag, 1869); (5) 'Observations on the Danger arising from the Proximity of Lightning Conductors to gas and water pipes, and the means of obviating it' (ibid, 1872); (6) 'Experimental research on the Discharge of Air under various pressures' (ibid, 1885); (7) Other contributions to Theoretical and Experimental Physics; (8) Great interest in, and assistance rendered in the general promotion of Science. |
