Has greatly extended the progress of physical, and especially engineering science in Canada by his research work in the testing and hydraulic laboratories installed under his direction, for which much of the apparatus has been designed by himself; and by his advice and direction in the equipment of the Physical and other Laboratories of the McGill University. Author of the following papers and works: 'Theory of Structure and Strength of Materials'; 'Applied Mechanics,' 1882, 1893; 'Hydraulic Motors,' 1893; 'Hydraulics,' 1895; 'Work in Canada,' 1880; 'Maximum Bending Moment, &c, Flexure of Columns,' 1892; 'Presidental Address to Section III' (Trans Roy Soc of Canada, 1896); 'Experiments on Transverse Strength of Canadian White Pine, &c' Douglas Fir, &c (Trans Canadian Soc CE, 1893-1897); 'The Hydraulic Laboratory of McGill College,' a Paper read before the British Association at Toronto, 1897.
