Citation | Lecturer in Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine, University of Cambridge. Has carried out important investigations in Bacteriology and Physiology, among which may be specially mentioned: - (1) those in which he brought forward the first clear proof of the bactericidal properties of blood-plasma and other animal liquids, apart from the presence of leucocytes; (2) those in which, conjointly with Professor Thierfelder, he showed that the presence of bacteria in the alimentary canal is not in any way essential to normal digestion and absorption of food; (3) those on the role of insects in propagating infectious diseases. Is Editor of the Journal of Hygiene. Has published the following among other papers: - 'Experimente uber die bakterienfeindliche Einflusse des thierischen Korpers' (Zeitschr fur Hygiene, 1888); 'Thiersisches leben ohne Bakerien im Verdauungskannal' (Zeitschr fur Physiol Chemie, 1896, 1897, 1898), with Professor Thierfelder; 'Die Rolle welche Insekten bei der Verbreitung von Infektions-Krankheiten Spielen' (Centralbl fur Bakteriologie, 1897, 1898); 'The Role of Insect, Arachnids, and Myriapods as carriers in the spread of Bacterial and Parasitic Diseases' (Johns Hopkins Hospital Reports, 1899); 'The Structure and Biology of Anopheles,' with Mr Shipley (Journal of Hygiene, 1901, Nos 1, 2, 4,); 'The Geographical Distribution of Anopheles in relation to the former distribution of Ague in England' (ibid, 1901), with Messrs Cobbett and Pigg; 'The Formation of Specific Anti-bodies in the Blood, following upon treatment with the Sera of different Animals' (ibid, 1901). |
