Citation | District Geologist on the Geological Survey. Distinguished for original and detailed researches (1) on the Glacial Phenomena of Yorkshire, the Isle of Man, and the north of Ireland; (2) on the Zones and Stratigraphical Relations of the Lower Cretaceous Series of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and the Midland Counties; and (3) on Structural Geology with especial reference to the Manx Slates and the Carboniferous Volcanic Rocks of the Isle of Man. Was awarded the Bigsby Medal of the Geological Society in 1901. Has been Secretary and Recorder of Section C, British Association. His published contributions to Geological Science date from 1878, and include: 'Occurrence of Marine Shells in Boulder-Clay at Bridlington (Determination of so-called Bridlington 'Crag')' (Geol Mag 1878); 'Fossils and Subdivisions of Glacial Drift of Yorkshire' (Quart Journ Geol Soc, 1884 and 1891); 'Notes on Muir Glacier of Alaska' ('Nature,' 1886); 'Glacial Shell-beds of British Columbia' (Quart Journ Geol Soc, 1886); 'Subdivisions of Speeton Clay' (ibid, 1889 and 1896), and (with A Pavlow) (Bull Soc Imp Moscow, 1892); 'Crush-Conglomerates of Isle of Man' (with W W Watts) (Quart Journ Geol Soc, 1895); 'Volcanic Rocks of Isle of Man' (ibid, 1900); 'Fossiliferous Band in Lower Greensand, Leighton Buzzard' (with J F Walker) (ibid, 1903).
