Citation | Professor of Zoology in King's College, University of London. Sometime Professor of Biology in Canterbury College, Christchurch, New Zealand, and Professor of Zoology in the South African College, Cape Town. Distinguished as a Zoologist. Has published the important results of numerous researches on Sponges and Planarian Worms, and on several remarkable animals of the Australian and New Zealand Faunas. Joint author of the Report on the Monaxonida of HMS 'Challenger'; sole author of the Report on the Sponges in the 'Pearl Oyster Fisheries of Manaar,' published by the Royal Society. Author of a series of 'Studies on the Comparative Anatomy of Sponges' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1888-1894); and of other papers, among which may be specially mentioned those on a 'Free-swimmming Hydroid' (ibid, 1902); on 'Australian Land Planarians' (Trans Roy Soc Vict, 1889-1891); on an 'Australian Land Nemertine' (Proc Roy Soc Vict, 1891); and on the 'Holothurians of New Zealand' (Journ Linn Soc Zool, 1897). Collected materials for a complete study of the development of the New Zealand reptile Sphenodon, and published the principal results in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, 1898, Quarterly Journal Microscopical Science, 1899, and Transactions of the New Zealand Institute, 1899. The latter research led to important observations on the parietal eye, which were followed by new observations on the parietal sense-organs in a New Zealand lamprey (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1906). |
