TitleLedingham, Sir John Charles Grant: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse. Citation typed
CitationChief Bacteriologist, Lister Institute. Dr Ledingham has made notable additions to knowledge in the domains of bacteriology, immunology; haematology, and experimental pathology. The wide range covered by his researches will be seen from the list of his published papers appended to this certificate. In collaboration with Bulloch, he showed that only those leucocytosis-producing substances which contain nucleo-protein are able, when injected, to raise temporarily the content of antibody in the blood. His quantitative studies of phagocytosis determining the influence of temperature and other conditions upon its rate, and the discovery that the apparently vital act of ingestion by leucocytes follows the physico-chemical law for adsorption, are fundamental. Dr Ledingham, either alone or in conjunction with his pupils, has made important researches in bacteriology, of which may be instanced researches on the initial period of bacterial growth, the bacteriology of summer diarrhoea, and upon typhoid carriers. In the field of pathology he has also made valuable contributions. With Marchand he was the first to describethe pathological lesionsin Kala-Azar. His work on haematology and leukaemia has added to knowledge of these subjects, and his more recent experiments on purpura have opened up a new field full of promise, for all the phenomena associated with this hitherto obscure disease have been experimentally produced. During the war Dr Ledingham was a member of the Advisory Committee for prevention of disease which visited the armies in the distant theatres of war, and, subsequently, Consulting Bacteriologist to the Mesopotamian Forces.
