Citation | Professor of Chemistry in the University College of North Wales, Bangor. Member of the Council of the Chemical Society, and sometime member of the Council of the Institute of Chemistry. Distinguished for his knowledge of chemistry, and especially of organic chemistry. Author of about ninety original papers in the Transactions of the Chemical Society, the Journal of Physiology, and elsewhere. Amongst the most notable of his researches are his extensive 'Studies of Substitution and of Isomeric Change in the Benzene Series,' which are amongst the most important of recent contributions to these subjects; 'Studies in the Reaction of Acetic Anhydrides' (Trans Chem Soc, 1908-1912); 'Estimation of Hypoiodites and Iodates' (ibid, 1900); 'Benzoylation of Alkapton Urine' (Journ of Physiol, 1901); 'The Action of Light on Diazo-Compounds' (Trans Chem soc, 1907); 'Preparation of Crystalline Bleaching Powder' (ibid, 1909); 'Estimation of Mixtures of Para-Acetaldehyde and Acetal' (ibid, 1916); 'The Temperature of Critical Solution of a Ternary Mixture' (ibid, 1919). During the last five years the candidate has been actively engaged in chemical research for the Ministry of Munitions. His work is characterized by breadth and thoroughness and a high degree of accuracy. |
