Citation | Distinguished for researches in applied mathematics, particularly in the following: - (a) Dynamical theory of the tides - series of papers on tides in polar and zonal basins (Proc Lond Math Soc, 1913-1915). Has obtained a solution for ocean between two meridians on rotating globe and elucidated origin of Atlantic tides (Proc Roy Soc, 1927). (b) Theory of Saturn's Ring - 'The influence of Satellites upon the Form of Saturn's Ring' (Phil Trans, 1921); 'The Cause of Encke's Division in Saturn's Ring' (Proc Roy Soc, 1923); 'The Possible Ellipticity of Saturn's Ring' (Proc Roy Soc, 1924). (c) Theory of torsional vibrations in reciprocating engine shafts. Has published several papers of practical importance (Proc Roy Soc, 1925-1926), including an experimental verification of theoretical predictions. |
