CitationCo-editor of the Bio-chemical Journal. Distinguished for his researches in biochemistry; determined the constitution of spermine and synthesised this substance (with O Rosenheim and W W Starling); greatly improved the methods for preparing insulin; carried out an important investigation on the active principles of the pituitiary; made (largely with H D Dakin) numerous contributions to the chemistry of proteins and amino-acids, and to our knowledge of intermediate metabolism; first detected (with E Woodman) the nature of the chemical difference between corresponding proteins from allied species.
