CitationDistinguished for his researches on insects, especially Lepidoptera. Published a monograph on 'African Mimetic Butterflies' (Oxford, 1910), the result of many years' work. Also numerous papers, in Trans Ent Soc Lond, on the systematics of Lepidoptera Rhopalocera, including monographs of the Genera 'Heliconius' (1916), 'Acroea' (1912), 'Neptis' (1921), and 'Larinopoda' (1922); on insect histology, especially of Scent Organs in Lepidoptera and Trichoptera ('Hydroptila'); urticating hairs; the history and physiology of Insect Vision; and the auditory and other organs of Lepidoptera. Author of the sections on 'Acroea' in 'Genera Insectorum' (Brussels, 1916) and in 'Catalogus Lepidopterorum' (Berlin, 1913)
