TitlePolanyi, Michael: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationHas contributed to our knowledge of absorbtion of gases on solids and contributed to the theory of the plasticity and strength of metal crystals and fibre-structure in cold worked wires, has communicated fifteen papers on these subjects. Discovered the fibre structure in cellulose and elucidated fibre diagrams in X ray analysis, invented a rotating crystal method of analysis. Has contributed largely to our knowledge of atom reactions especially in dilute flames. Has published important papers on activation energies. He made the first theoretical calculation of an activation energy and with many co-workers H Eyring M G Evans and E T Butler has extended the theoretical basis of the Transition State method of calculation of reaction rates
