Date | 1981 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for studies in experimental fluid mechanics and transport processes, including effects of sound and vibrations, separated flows, and blood flows. Early studies on separated turbulent flows included measurements in the near-wake of effects of sound and vibrations on convection showed how local changes corresponded to effects of Reynolds stresses induced by the imposed oscillations; this work resolved the controversy as to how the effects were caused. In his more recent work on blood flow, Richardson has applied his fluid mechanical knowledge to the design and operation of successful transport devices (blood oxygenators, also the hybrid artificial pancreas) as well as to the processes underlying thrombosis. Systematic performance evaluation of oxygenators in his laboratory has led to the development of a microporous membrane oxygenator now in widespread use, and has contributed to the establishment of international standards; also to the role of pathobiologically determined limitations of artificial organs. Current work includes development of an implantable booster lung and of a hybrid artificial pancreas. Experimental measurements in thrombosis have been explained by Richardson, who has developed a theory for mural platelet aggregation which takes account of rheological aspects; he has also developed new methods for quantifying platelet adhesion and effects of flow and drugs on thrombosis. |
