Title | Ridley, Nicholas Harold Lloyd: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | In 1949 Ridley was the first to replace successfully the human cataractus lens with an artificial lens. After working out the optics involved he used an ICI plastic, Perspex CQ, which to-day has not been bettered. Ridley's original technique was then too difficult for most surgeons, but subsequent improvements in microsurgery and lens implant manufacture re-established his original method as the preferred operation, (60% of over one million intraocular lens inserrions performed in 1985). This operation is now and for the forseeable future an established part of modern opthalmic surgery. It is rare that such an outstanding advance can be so clearly traced back to the skill and vision of one man. In his earlier days Ridley made important original contributions to tropical opthalmology, namely in onchocerciasis, nutritional amblyopia, keratomalacia in infants, and ocular leprosy. |
