| Citation | Lecturer in Chemistry in Guy's Hospital Medical School; Lecturer in Physical Chemistry and Instructor in Crystallography at the City and Guilds College. Distinguished as a worker in pure chemistry, physical chemistry, experimental physics and crystallography, particularly on account of his comprehensive studies of Camphor Derivatives and of the Phenomena of Dynamic Isomerism. In the latter he has advanced proof that the alteration of substances which undergo isomeric change takes place only if a catalyst be present; another result of exceptional importance is the proof he has given that the change in the rotatory power of glucose and inferentially of other sugars is a process of reversible isomeric change. Has brought the method of determining the natural and magnetic rotatory power of substances over the whole range of the visible and ultra-violet spectrum, by visual and photographic methods, to a high state of perfection. Has also done electrical work of special excellence. Remarkable on account of his skill and assiduity and the thoroughness of his work as well as his originality, his wide knowledge and the soundness of his judgement. Author of the following three papers: - 'The Electrical Conductivity and other Properties of Sodium Hydroxide in Aqueous Solution' (with W R Bousfield, Phil Trans,1904); 'The Chemistry of the Silver Voltmeter' (with F E Smith, National Physical Laboratory, ibid, 1907); 'Optical Rotatory Dispersion, Part I. The Natural and Magnetic Rotatory Dispersion in Quartz of Light in the Visible Region of the Spectrum' (ibid, 1912). Also of numerous other communications to the Royal, Chemical and other Societies. |
