A distinguished investigator in the field of physical chemistry. Has made important discoveries concerning the mechanism of the galvanic cell and of electrode processes, and the properties of solutions of electrolytes and non-electrolytes. Has published several series of articles on electro-capillarity, adsorption at the surface of solutions, behaviour of electrolytes in mixed solvents, free energy of organic substances in solution, and reactions of heavy water, in the Society's Proceedings and in other journals. Author of "The Chemical Elements and their Compounds " and the "Fundamentals of Chemical Thermodynamics. " Meldola Medallist of the Institute of Chemistry, 1928.
