Distinguished for his work on colloids, mainly on their physical properties. Has done pioneer work on anomalous viscosity, the viscosity of emulsions, the elastic behaviour of gels and imitation of organic forms. Prepared herapathite suspensions as model of doubly-refractory liquid. Was the first to give a systematic course of lectures on colloidal chemistry in England, at the Sir John Cass Institute (1911-1935). Was the guest of honour at the Colloid Symposium at Ottawa in 1932. Author of "The Viscosity of Liquids", a standard work, "Introduction to the Physics and Chemistry of Colloids", and of other works on colloidal matters. His work touches on physics, chemistry and biology. List of papers appended.
