Physicist, Antarctic Expedition (Endurance) 1914-1916. Commission (R.E.) 1916-1918 in charge of Sound-Ranging Instruction, France. Helped to found securely theory of intensity of X-ray reflection. Responsible for best experimental work on thermal movements of atoms in crystals and direct determination of zero-point energy. Is the expert on applications of quantum-theory to all problems of X-ray diffraction; now engaged in preparation of standard treatment of this subject in Vol. II 'Crystalline State'. Author of many papers in 'Proc. Roy. Soc.' and other journals, and of 'X-ray Crystallograpphy', Methuen.
