CitationLythgoe, Richard James (London). M.A., M.D., D.Sc., Reader in Physiology of the Sense Organs, Department of Physiology, University College London. Distinguished for his work on visual sensations and on the physiology of vision. His investigations on visual adaption and flicker, and on visual acuity have formed the subject of Special Reports (Nos 134 and 173) of the Medical Reserch Council. Work on eye movements, binocular summation, dark adaptation, and peripheral colour sensation represents important contributions to the subject. Researches, carried out with various collaborators on the distribution, estimation and photochemistry of visual purple have yielded important results bearing on the physico-chemical problems associated with vision and on the phenomena of night blindness, and are still in progress.
