CitationMorton, Sir James (Carlisle). LL.D. (St. Andrews). Textile manufacturer. Distinguished for his original work on the stability of dyestuffs in light and the outstanding service he has rendered to the dyestuffs industry by developing the manufacture of stable materials. Sir James began as a textile manufacturer. He then added a Dye-works to his factory. Before the Great War, he was noted for his light-fast fabrics. He had used special German dyestuff for these. When the supply failed, with astonishing enterprise he erected works at Carlisle and Grangemouth, where he has most successfully developed the manufacture of dyestuffs formerly made only in Germany. Jade Green, one of his discoveries, when first produced was generally recognised as the greatest advance in dystuffs introduced into commerce up to that date. He has also developed a remarkable process of directly producing the dyestuffs in the reduced state. Since Perkin, probably, no other worker has covered so wide a range. He had the genius to appreciate the value of the direct oxidation of naphthalene to phthalic acid and has develped the process to one of remarkable perfection. He has thus made the production of anthracene derivatives possible without the use of coal tar anthracene.
