Chief, Division of Plant Industry, Department of Agriculture, Union of South Africa. Director of Botanical survey of South Africa. Distinguished for his Mycological researches, especially the 'Rust' diseases of Cereals and Coffee, Bitter Pit of apples and diseases of fruit, particularly in relation to cold storage problems. Also for his systematic work ont he Aloes and on the Fungi and Flowering plants of South Africa. His botanical explorations have extended over nearly all S. Africa and his studies of pasture grasses and work on soil erosion have been of great value to the Union. He has made valuable collections and unsurpassed photographic records of the vegetation of South Africa and has stimulated both the Government and private individuals to promote and encourage research of great importance to South African Botany and Agriculture.
