Distinguished as an organic chemist. He has made important contributions to knowledge in connexion with stereochemistry, molecular compounds, the chemistry of nitroso-compounds, photochemical bromination of nitro-compounds and the relation of physical properties with molecular constitution. Chiefly interested in the mechanism of chemical change and other theoretical aspects of organic chemistry, his experimental work has covered a wide field and has been developed by an excellent combination of chemical and physical methods. Almost all his work is independent or with junior collaborators. A lsit of publications is attached.
