Distinguished for his knowledge of Fungi. Mycologist at the British Museum since 1910, except for three years with R.A.M.C. as protozoologist, chiefly in Macedonia. Has applied modern laboratory methods to improvement of taxonomic investigation and greatly helped researches of others. Did much to put the growing of orchids by pure culture methods on a scientific basis and has given special attention to preservation of timber, fabrics adn the like. General Secretary, British Mycological Socity since 1923, co-editor since 1918. Publications: 'Fungi Pathogenic to Man' (Medical Research Council); 'Handbook to larger British Fungi' (British Museum). 'Fungi - An Introduction to Mycology.' etc.
