CitationStephenson, Thomas Alan (Cape Town). D.Sc. (London). Professor of Zoology in the University of Cape Town.
Distinguished for his researches in marine zoology. Has made extensive studies of the anatomy, bionomics and reproduction of the sea-anemones (Actinaria) culminating in his monograph on the British sea-anemones published by the Ray Society. His work has led to a re-classification of the entire group. On the Great Barrier Reef Expedition (1928-29) he studied especially the growth, breeding and asexual reproduction of corals and the structure and general ecology of coral reefs. His reports on these subjects contain much that is new and of fundamental improtance, for example, the first description of the budding of a young coral colony from observtion of living material. He is now engaged on a survey of the intertidal region of South Africa. A list of papers is appended.
