CitationBaker, John William (Leeds). Lecturer in Chemistry, University of Leeds.
Distinguished as an organic chemist in the field of reaction mechanism. Has published numerous communications dealing with triad and ring-chain prototropy. Another extensive research deals with aromatic substitution, and offshoots from this include an important group of papers on oxonium salt formation. Kinetic investigations of reactions in aromatic side-chains have led to the recognition of a special effect associated with the C-H link of alkyl groups, and the study of this has been generalised by other methods. Mention may be made of work on synthesis of alicyclic rings including spiro-compounds, and of two monographs.
