Distinguished as an organic chemist, having made notable contributions ranging over a wide field and including the study of aromatic nitration, metal co-ordination compounds and the chemistry of oximes. Has given substantial support to the stereochemical conception of the structure of oximes and their methylation products, and has taken an important part in the correction of oxime configurations. Other contributions relate to aconimtine, phenoxazines and benzo-triazoles. Author of more than 80 original papers published in the 'Journal of the Chemical Society'.
