Responsible for inception, development, and direction of Metropolitan-Vickers' research laboratories and training organisations with a staff of 380 persons, of whom 130 are of graduate standing. Fundamental researches in the laboratories include electric stresses in dielectrics, crystal orientation in magnetic materials, rearrangement of atoms in alloys, stresses under explosions, materials under high-temperature steam, corrosion, high vacuum technique (leading to valves of great power). More than 50 scientific papers in recent years in 'Proceedings' and elsewhere. Pure scientific research in this country has been assisted very greatly indeed by apparatus designed in his laboratoy and by techniques developed there.
