Pioneer of the activated sludge process for sewage-disposal, based on forty years' chemical and bacteriological research leading through small-scale plants to many great municipal installations now operating hundreds of millions of gallons in daily aggregate; it is elaborated in very numerous technical reports and communications to scientific journals, causing its adoption in many countries including England, America, China and India. During 1916-24 he developed the first school of biochemistry in India as Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, there dealing with many subjects of great economic importance to India, notable the biochemistry of lac, and the nitrogen cycle.
