Distinguished for his knowledge of geology and his geological researches in Egypt, the Sudan, and adjacent territories, where he devoted eight years from 1925 onwards to direction of special Nile valley surveys, taking part in exploration of north-western Sudan frontiers. Also studied the geology and glaciology of North-East Land, and the Pleistocene geology of Britain. Secretary and director of the bureau of international commission on raised beaches. Author of volume on geology and prehistory of the Nile valley (Chicago University Press), and joint author with W J Arkell of three companion volumes; also 50 geological publications in British and foreign journals and official memoirs.
