CitationTownend, Donald Thomas Alfred (Leeds). Livesey Profesor of Applied Chemistry.
Dr Townend is noted for his work on combustion. With Bone and Newitt and with his own students he prosecuted the study of burning of gaseous fuels to pressures exceeding a thousand atmospheres. He assisted in the discovery of the chemical activation of nitrogen in the carbon monoxide-air flame. His later work is largely concerned with 'cool flames' and their connection with the ignition of hydrocarbons. This work has important bearing on the probvlem of 'knock'. He is joint author of two important books on combustion, and besides several articles has published 25 papers in collaboration or independently.
