Distinguished as an organic chemist who has built up an active research school in the Technical College, Cardiff. Researches concerned mainly with reaction mechanism in the study of which physical methods are employed freely. Subjects of the more important groups of papers include the halogenation of acids, and acid-anhydrides and -halides, halogenation of ketones, prototropic change, electrolytic dissociation, aromatic side-chain reactions, ester hydrolosis, relation of reaction rate to dipole moment. Has inspired much further research in the record of which he does not appear as a co-author. Author of 'Modern Theories fo Organic Chemistry'.
