A distinguished pioneer in modern research on backward, unstable and delinquent children, their individual mental differences, the influences fo heredity, environment, etc. The first to demonstrate the greater value of tests of higher mental abilities, as compared with sensory and motor tests, in the measurement of intelligence, and to produce evidence of the existence of 'group' abilities in addition to 'general' and 'special' abilities. Has devised original tests now widely used in the measurement of intelligence and scholastic attainments, and has made notable contributions to methods of vocational guidance and of the 'factor analysis' of abilities and emotions.
