Citation | Hamer, Frances Mary (London). Research Chemist. M.A., Sc.D. (Camb), D.Sc. (London). Distinguished for her work on photographic sensitising dyes and desensitisers. She synthesised the first cyanine dye in which two heterocyclic nuclei are linked by a nitrogen atom instead of a methine group. Recognised the existence of three heterocyclic nuclei in neocyanine (1928) and completed the proof of its constituteion by an ingenious synthesis (1942). Materially improved the method of linking nuclei by use of ethyl orthoformate. Has written reports for International Photographic Congresses and a complete article on Cyanine Dyes for Thorpe's Dictionary of Applied Chemistry (4th Edition, 1939) |
