CitationManske, Richard helmuth Fritz Ph.d., D.Sc. (Manchester. Director of Reserch, Dominion Rubber Co. Limited, Canada. Nationality: Canadian
Distinguished as an organic chemist. Almost all his work has been on the chemistry of alkaloiods but his contributions in that field have been characterised by individual originalilty bith in plan and in detail. After early joint work on the synthesis of harmeline and rutaecarpine and related studies, he has almost singlehandedly made a unique survey especially of the alkaloids of papaveraceous and fumariaceous plants. This led to the discovery of many new alkaloids, the molecular structures of which he has determined. Most significantly his work has laid the foundation for a novel branch of phytochemistry. Several generalisations already adumbrated.
