CitationMA, PH.D Senior Research Officer, University of Oxford. His principal claim to election depends on his important contributions to the introduction of penicillin into medicine. He carried out all the experimental and production fermentations during the first part of the work on penicillin at Oxford and devised the cylinder-plate method for its assay. This method of assay has been used in the isolation of all the antibiotics now used in medicine and is widely employed for a variety of purposes. He extended Clutterbuck, Lovell and Raistrick's observations on the extraction of penicillin to a workable solvent-transfer process still used in its manufacture. Since the work on penicillin he has isolated, described, or worked on other antibiotics, and is currently working on gastro-intestinal muco-substances and on secretin.
