Title | Letter from Edward Hull, 14 Stanley Gardens, Notting Hill, W, to Professor Schuster, [Royal Society] |
Creator | Hull; Edward (1829 - 1917) |
Date | 30 January 1913 |
Description | Acknowledges previous correspondence and Schuster's friendly spirit in dealing with the disagreeable task of requesting him to withdraw his paper. States that the subject of his paper was outside the character of communication to the Royal Society at the present days, which are, in the main, physical. Explains his motivations in putting in his paper were to to elicit discussion on a novel subject of great interest & importance, and to do justice to the memory and work of his late friend, Reverend Maxwell Close, mathematician. The mathematical push of his paper, the correctness of which he had full confidence, as far as the subject is confessedly tentative but not on taht account to be abandoned, stating that Close was aware of the "supposition" quoted by Schuster, as an hypthesis. States that Schuster failed to mention the authorities upon which the Committee founded their decision but that it would be useless to demean them, therefore he will refrain and clonclude to agree to the request to withdraw the paper. Mentions that he finds consolation in the way the Royal Society treated his "Monograph on the Atlantic Ocean". |
