CreatorSmith; Sir; Grafton Elliot (1871 - 1937)
Date24 January 1914
DescriptionRefers to previous requests from the Royal Society for him to present a report on the Piltdown brain, and a memoir dealing with the fossil human cranial cast and offer it to the Society. Informs he has now completed the investigations and only the pressure of official business has prevented him from writing, stating that many Fellows have urged him to present his report as soon as possible, because the only way to stop further flandering will be the presentation of the full facts of the case. Informs he is now endeavouring to write his report in readiness for presentation to the Society and enquires whether it may be permitted to give an oral statement at a meeting (with an abstract of "Proceedings" dimensions") before the full manuscript for the Transactions of the Royal Society has been submitted and approved by referees. The title he wishes to communicate will be "The Brain of Primitive Man, with special reference to the Cranial Cast and Skull of Eoantropus ("The Piltdown Man").
