TitleLetter from Arnold [Rowsby] Tankard, Chemical and Bacteriological Laboratories, 40 Lowgate, Hull, to The Secretaries, The Royal Society, Burlington House, W
CreatorTankard, Arnold Rowsby (fl 1915); Public Analyst at Hull
Date9 February 1915
DescriptionConcerned about the potential consequences of allowing ships' cargoes of cotton to proceed to Germany without interference, as it is believed that much of this cotton will be used by the Germans for manufacturing explosives. Highlights that the Government has the authority to seize such shipments, as demonstrated at the beginning of the wa, referencing a letter by Mr. Bertram Blount published in the press, which has drawn attention to this issue.
Suggests it would be beneficial for chemical and allied societies to officially address this matter by passing a resolution and proposes bringing the seriousness of the situation to the attention of the Prime Minister, the War Office, and the Foreign Secretary. Request that if the Royal Society Council agrees with this objective, they pass a resolution accordingly and forward it to the relevant authorities. States he will be reaching out to other societies and associations with similar concerns, hoping for a coordinated effort to address the issue.
