Title | Letter from Andrew Gray, The Natural Philosophy Institute, The University, Glasgow, to The President and Council of the Royal Society |
Creator | Gray; Andrew (1847 - 1925) |
Date | 4 November 1915 |
Description | Referring to forms that were filled in and returned to the Royal Society, of men who are qualified by their scientific knowledge and experience to render special help to the country in the war effort, enquires what arrangements, if any, the Society has made. Asks whether the Royal Society devised a working plan, and urged on the Government that it should be completed in all practical details and put into immediate operation. Riases concern that scientists and engineers are being wasted by serving in the infantry. Details the plan adopted in Glasgow pertaining to engineers, opining that their expertise has been wasted as they have been denied positions in the Royal Engineers. Maintains that action ought to be taken to bring all the centres of scientific work, especially applied science, into touch with the new needs which arise at every emergency, calling for a central representative committee. Urges the Royal Society to use their influence and achieve something of the sort. |
