| Description | Noting the resignation of Alfred P. Veale, owing to his taking up a post in India. The appointment of a successor is necessary, and after conversations with committee members, Haldane proposes that Mr. J.G. Garrett, a lecturer in surveying at Birmingham University's Mining Department should be appointed for the remainder of the year. Garrett proposes an experimental investigation in direct measurement of the fall of ventilating pressure along roadways in mines. He has already carried out preliminary work at a Midland Colliery and if his method can be perfected, it is likely to improve ventilation. Most of the remaining work can be carried out in the experimental mine in the grounds of Birmingham University. Ventilation is one of the research areas specified in the terms of the Tyndall bequest. He proposes that one quarter's salary be paid to Mr. Veale, who has done a good deal of work with Professor Moss. Haldane will consider it an agreement if no alternative proposals are received in a fortnight. |
